Iowa police officer injured in crash, released from rehabilitation center

The Des Moines police officer that was injured after being struck by a car while directing traffic for the Iowa State Fair has now been released from a rehabilitation center in Chicago in order to return home.

The accident occurred on Aug. 19 when a pickup truck struck the man just outside of the fairgrounds causing him to be thrown 47 feet. The pickup truck driver was allegedly driving under the influence and was charged with operating while intoxicated, possession of marijuana, and serious injury caused by a vehicle.

He remains in a Polk County Jail on a $52,000 bond. The officer was in critical condition for many weeks after the accident and it was feared that he would not survive. After his condition began to improve, he was transferred from Des Moines to Chicago and has since been released from the facility.
