Des Moines cyclist struck by bus

According to police, a 13-year-old Des Moines resident was struck by a bus as he rode his bike through the intersection of Sixth Street and Forest Avenue around 9 p.m. Tuesday.

The teenager was hit by a Des Moines Area Regional Transit Authority bus when he entered the intersection perpendicular to oncoming traffic. He was taken to Mercy Medical Center with a broken leg and facial abrasions but is expected to make a full recovery.

Witnesses report that the teen ran a red light to enter the intersection and that the bus had the right of way. The bus driver has no history of disciplinary problems or traffic violations.

No charges have been filed.
