The facts about distracted driving
Distracted driving causes thousands of fatalities each year in the United States, and can be caused by several activities that make a driver lose focus of the primary task at hand, driving.
The U.S. Department of Transportation declared April as National Distracted Driving Month. Different activities that are classified as distractions can include: texting on a cellphone, talking on a cellphone, dealing with the radio, talking to people inside the same vehicle, and eating while driving.
These distractions can lead to fatal car accidents. In 2009, distracted drivers accounted for 5,474 fatalities and 448,000 injuries nationwide. That same year, 20 percent of all car accidents were caused by distracted driving, and 16 percent of those accidents included a fatality.
