Drunk driver crashes into Des Moines restaurant

On Saturday morning, a 31-year-old Des Moines man was arrested after he drove his motor vehicle into a downtown restaurant.

The man struck the Quizno’s restaurant at 319 Seventh Street in Des Moines. When police arrived on the scene, they noticed that the man smelled of alcohol and had bloodshot eyes.

He was arrested and charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated and failing to maintain control of his vehicle. He participated in a breath test, and he blew a 0.141. The legal blood alcohol limit in Iowa is 0.08.

Iowa police officer injured in crash, released from rehabilitation center

The Des Moines police officer that was injured after being struck by a car while directing traffic for the Iowa State Fair has now been released from a rehabilitation center in Chicago in order to return home.

The accident occurred on Aug. 19 when a pickup truck struck the man just outside of the fairgrounds causing him to be thrown 47 feet. The pickup truck driver was allegedly driving under the influence and was charged with operating while intoxicated, possession of marijuana, and serious injury caused by a vehicle.

He remains in a Polk County Jail on a $52,000 bond. The officer was in critical condition for many weeks after the accident and it was feared that he would not survive. After his condition began to improve, he was transferred from Des Moines to Chicago and has since been released from the facility.

Iowa plans to step up drunk driving enforcement during Labor Day holiday

Police agencies across the state of Iowa are going to be cracking down on drunk  driving during the Labor Day holiday.

The campaign, “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over,” began last Thursday and will run through Labor Day weekend. Officers will have the most patrols out on nights and weekends because this is the most common times that people are driving impaired.

In 2009, there were 371 fatal crashes in Iowa and 96 of them were alcohol-related. A high percentage of motorists are between the age group 21-24. During this time last year when similar enforcement was done, there were seven fatal crashes and two of them involved drunk drivers.

Teachers union leader serving jail time after DUI

The head of the Iowa State Education Association is serving a three-day jail sentence after being convicted of a DUI charge.

According to the Des Moines Register,¬† the man is serving the sentence for a drunken driving arrest that occurred on Dec. 17. The man was elected president of the union in 2008 and released a statement that he felt bad about his actions and will work extremely hard to “regain the trust of the union’s 33,000 members.”
