Fatal accidents in Iowa expected to increase in 2016

Iowa authorities predict that this year’s number of deadly road accidents will increase from 2015’s, an article of The Des Moines Register reported on June 27.

According to the Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT), 170 people in the state died in vehicular accidents from January to June this year. This year’s record exceeded the five-year average of 140 for the same time period. The DOT said the number of fatalities early this year are likely caused by a combination of distracted or impaired driving, speeding, and not wearing seat belts. Although an increase in miles traveled is also to blame, a state patrol officer noted that many of the fatal accidents were single-vehicle crashes caused by speeding. The officer advised motorists in Iowa to wear seat belts, slow down, and avoid driving while intoxicated or distracted.

Thousands of GM vehicles in the U.S. recalled

Over 48,000 vehicles manufactured by General Motors (GM) are being recalled in the U.S. to address a seat belt problem that may increase injury risk in accidents, GM Authority stated on September 17.

Reports said there are an estimated 48,114 Buick Encore compact SUVs and Cadillac ATS sedans with faulty pretensioner cables that may not lock the lap belts of the drivers’ seat and front passenger seat. Occupants are at high risk of suffering injuries in crashes if the safety belts unexpectedly malfunction. Owners of the affected vehicles will receive notifications to replace of the faulty pretensioner cables at their local dealerships once the parts are ready.

Serious injuries can occur if the safety features of their vehicle fail to work. If you believe that a defective vehicle caused your injury, you may be entitled to remunerations. Water Works Park car accident claims 1 life, injures another

Monday morning in Water Works Park, a single-vehicle accident claimed the life of one man, and injured another.

Des Moines police responded to an accident report around 7 a.m. on Monday, and found a vehicle near the north entrance to the Water Works Park, partly submerged in the water. Police pronounced a 23-year-old man dead at the scene, and a 28-year-old Des Moines man was transported to a nearby hospital to be treated for minor injuries.

According to police, the car accident had no witnesses, but it seemed as if the driver had lost control of his vehicle while attempting to turn on a road near the park. The vehicle collided with a cement structure, causing it to plummet into the water.

Our thoughts are with the victim’s family and friends during this difficult time.
