Full-body scanners are set to be installed at the Des Moines airport today. The installation of these scanners has been met with much criticism from residents and political personnel alike.
People are concerned with their invasion of privacy being violated as well as the cost of the machines being justified. Each scanner costs approximately $130,000 to $170,000 to purchase as well as install. So far throughout the United States, there have been 570 scanners put in 130 different airports.
These scanners emit electromagnetic waves that jump off individuals and create a body outline that would reveal any harmful objects potentially on the person. If a person refuses to go through one of these scanners, they will be physically patted down by an officer at the airport.
