An ambulance-truck accident in Boone County Thursday has left two dead and two in critical condition, according to police.
The incident occurred around 11:30 a.m. on Highway 30 near Beaver. An ambulance from St. Anthony Regional Hospital was transporting a 75-year-old Carroll man to another hospital.
The ambulance had its emergency lights on and was passing traffic on the highway. A semi-trailer truck ahead of the ambulance in the left lane attempted to move into the right lane to allow the ambulance to pass.
Unfortunately, the ambulance moved into the right lane at the same time and crashed into the back of the truck.
The 75-year-old man as well as a 53-year-old nurse in the ambulance were both killed. The driver of the ambulance and a paramedic were also critically injured.
Early Thursday morning, Iowa State Patrol officers found an 86 year-old woman asleep in her wrecked vehicle along a country road.
The woman is currently being treated at the Floyd County Medical center for injuries sustained in the accident.
Authorities believe that the accident occurred after she lost control of her vehicle, and struck trees and a culvert during the wreck.
