Investigators later revealed the two motorcyclists were riding side by side moments before the accident happened. The Johnston motorcyclist was later charged with vehicular homicide by reckless driving and vehicular homicide by drag racing.

According to the information provided by Mason City Police, a 2005 Harley-Davidson Sportster and a 2005 Toyota Corolla had a collision at the intersection of Eighth Street Northwest and Pierce Avenue. The motorcycle operator, identified as a 51-year-old male, was heading north on Pierce Avenue when he collided with the vehicle, driven by a 74-year-old woman who had turned left on Pierce Ave. from Eighth Street.
The motorcyclist was later pronounced dead after being treated at a hospital, while the woman received medical attention at the crash scene and was later discharged. Traffic flow along Pierce Avenue was interrupted while responding Mason City personnel worked on the crash scene. Police reported that they are still investigating the fatal incident.
